As educators and administrators in schools, it can be challenging to discern what respectful cultural representation is. Opportunities to accidentally appropriate are around every corner, from song choices, festivals, promotional materials, lesson plans, and more. Distinguishing between cultural appropriation and appreciation can sometimes be straightforward. Other times, there can be crucial nuances that take additional experience and knowledge. This course is designed to help participants hone their discernment skills with a mixture of lecture, presentation, and group discussion.
Each session will feature experienced guest presenters, a toolkit with resources for growing skills, and deep conversation on this topic, drawing from participants' questions and experiences. We will develop relationships across schools, becoming nourished and inspired by our growing connections and shared learning.
Questions about how to diversify and contextualize curriculum, about how to offer representation in school communities respectfully without culturally appropriating, are layered. This series offers an opportunity to ask these questions and listen deeply to several BIPOC educators who will share their knowledge, insight, and expertise. Participants will build skill and confidence to apply new frameworks and practices, replacing the harm caused by cultural appropriation with the respect of cultural appreciation.
Participants will:
Learn theory, principles, and tools to better understand and identify cultural appropriation
Practice tactics for turning appropriation into appreciation
Process and share together in small groups, working from both case studies and personal experience
Leave with an Alma Partners Toolkit for continued work
Cost: Sliding scale from $350 - $1500, with a group discount for schools sending 3 or more participants. (Contact us for the discount code if you are coming as a group.)
*Please note: in alignment with the Alma Partners core value of Centering Relationship, we do not record our sessions! Please plan to attend all three sessions.
